The Vedas are the foundation. The epics build on that foundation. The Puranas are everything else. There are eighteen principal Puranas - enormous texts containing cosmology, genealogy, geography, ritual instructions, philosophy, and - most importantly - stories. The stories in the Puranas are where everything happens. The births, marriages, battles, loves, jealousies, tricks, devotions, and transformations of the gods. They are teaching vehicles: complex, contradictory, sometimes disturbing, and very precise about what they are teaching if you know how to read them.
